A New Book by Robert W. Harrison

You're not stuck.
You're blocked.

There's a difference—and it may be the reason the same pattern keeps coming back.

Unblocked is for capable, self-aware people who understand the problem, know what they want, and still can't seem to make one important area move.

Does This Sound Familiar?

You know better.
You've done the work.
So why are you still stuck?

This isn't usually a problem of intelligence.

And for high performers, it often isn't a lack of effort either.

01

You set the goal. You built the plan. Something quietly pulled the other way.

02

You understand exactly why you do the thing. You still do the thing.

03

You make progress. It feels different this time. Then the old pattern comes back.

04

You've read the books, done the work, maybe even hired the coach—and this one area still won't move.

05

You perform at a high level almost everywhere else. Except here.

06

And somewhere along the way, you've started wondering whether this part of you is simply permanent.

Here's the possibility I want you to consider:

It may not be permanent.

It may be structural.

And structure can be changed.

Most of us try to solve a stubborn pattern at the level we can see.

We analyze it. Understand it. Plan around it. Motivate ourselves. Try harder.

Sometimes that works.

Sometimes it doesn't—because the thing maintaining the problem is operating at a different level.

Understanding is not the same as changing.

You may be trying to change the story
when the block is in the structure.

The visible problem is the part you can describe:

  • The goal you aren't reaching
  • The habit you keep repeating
  • The reaction you wish you didn't have
  • The decision you keep postponing
  • The thing you know you should do

But underneath the story may be a structure that keeps producing the same response.

The Mental Iceberg: Story above the waterline, Structure below — what you see versus what may be maintaining it.

You've probably spent a lot of time working on what you can see. Unblocked helps you look underneath it.

What if you're not stuck?

What if you're blocked?

And what if many of the patterns that keep capable people blocked could be understood through just four categories?

What if identifying the block changed what you should do next?

The Unblocked Framework

Four Blocks.
That's the map.

Self-help offers thousands of explanations for why people get stuck.

Unblocked gives you a simpler place to begin: four recurring kinds of blocks that can keep a pattern in place.

The important question isn't simply "Why am I like this?"

It's "What kind of block am I dealing with?"

01

Limiting Beliefs

A conclusion you reached—often long ago—that still shapes what feels possible now.

It can sound like:

"I'm not the kind of person who…"

02

Conflicting Priorities

Part of you wants the goal. Another part values something that seems to conflict with reaching it.

It can sound like:

"I want this. So why do I keep getting in my own way?"

03

Unconscious Protection

Some part of you has connected moving forward with risk, loss, or danger—and keeps applying the brakes.

It can sound like:

"I get right to the edge of it—and freeze."

04

Unresolved Past Experience

The event may be over, but the old response can still activate as though it isn't.

It can sound like:

"I know that was then. Why does it still feel like now?"

The right tool depends on the block.

This is why more motivation isn't always the answer.

And why another insight, another productivity system, or another promise to "try harder" can leave the real pattern untouched.

Different blocks call for different kinds of work.

Find the block.

Use the right process.

Create movement.

That's what Unblocked is about.

Unblocked book cover

Inside Unblocked

A practical map for the places where insight hasn't been enough.

Unblocked is designed to help you stop treating every stuck place like the same problem.

You'll learn how to look beneath the visible struggle, identify what may actually be keeping the pattern in place, and determine what kind of change process makes sense next.

01

Why Knowing Better Isn't Always Enough

Why insight can be valuable without automatically changing an emotional response, habit, decision or behavior.

02

Story vs. Structure

How to distinguish the problem you can describe from the pattern that may be maintaining it.

03

The Four Blocks

A practical framework for understanding several of the most common ways capable people remain stuck.

04

How to Recognize the Block

Questions and distinctions that help you determine what you may actually be dealing with.

05

Why Trying Harder Can Fail

Why effort aimed at the wrong level of the problem can create frustration without creating movement.

06

Matching the Process to the Problem

Why different kinds of blocks call for different approaches.

07

Building Momentum Again

How to stop circling the same problem and begin making your next move.

What could become possible if the block moved?

Maybe it's finally making the decision you keep postponing.

Following through on the plan without fighting yourself every step of the way.

Responding differently where you used to react automatically.

Moving forward on the goal that keeps stalling.

Letting an old experience belong to the past instead of continuing to shape the present.

Or simply feeling momentum again in the one part of your life that hasn't matched the rest of you.

Change the pattern.
Change the response.

About the Author

Why I wrote Unblocked

For 25 years, I've worked with people who were intelligent, capable, motivated—and still stuck in one important area.

Often, they already understood the problem. They knew where it came from. They knew what they "should" do. Sometimes they had already spent years working on it.

But the pattern kept coming back.

Again and again, I saw the same distinction: understanding the problem and changing what was maintaining it were not always the same thing.

I wrote Unblocked to give people a practical way to look beneath the surface, identify what may actually be keeping them stuck, and choose a more useful next step.

Because when you're solving the right problem at the right level, movement becomes possible again.

"The question isn't only why you're stuck. The more useful question may be: what is keeping you stuck?"

Maybe you don't need to try harder.

Maybe you need to find the block.

If you've ever thought, "I understand this—so why am I still doing it?" Unblocked was written for you.

Discover what may actually be keeping you stuck, learn how different blocks work, and begin building momentum again.
